Blogging Tip #2 of 5

Humour Me

The most sure-fire way to build a faithful blog audience is with (good) humour. Humour has legs. Syndicated comedies are among the most successful tv series ever. Cheers, Seinfeld, Friends….re-run after re-run, years after the show has gone off the air, and still garnering big audiences. The same can’t be said for dramas.

How can you build humour into your blog? Life. We all have one. Seinfeld was a show about nothing….so if you’re thinking you have nothing in your life to blog about, that may be your starting point (as George might say).

Blog Humour – Do’s and Don’ts

  1. Do make fun of yourself and your situation…don’t make fun of someone else unless you know they wouldn’t mind, and never do so in a hurtful way.
  2. Do use a little exaggeration or sarcasm to turn the mundane into the mirthful, but don’t over-use them.
  3. “But seriously folks”, if you don’t have a funny bone in your body, don’t try to force it. Humour should occur naturally and fit with your blog content. Unless you’re a stand-up comedian and your whole blog is one big joke, humour should be an nice accent touch, not the point of your blog.
  4. Playing with words is good; but if you have to explain the punch line then the joke is on you.
